Sum of the Distances to the Focal Points

One defining property of an ellipse is that, at any point on it, the sum of the distances to the two focal points is the same.

What is this sum also equal to? A clue is to look at the leftmost and rightmost points as, from there, the distance to each focal point can easily be expressed in terms of the semi-major axis a and the focal distance c.
